The West Arnhem Land Fire Abatement Stage 2 (WALFA2) Project uses strategic fire management activities across the project area to reduce the fire-generated emissions of methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). The west and central Arnhem Land region has had a recent history of severe late dry season wildfire covering many thousands of square kilometers.
This project applies strategic early dry season burning activities to reduce the total area that is burnt each year and to shift the seasonality of burning from Late Dry Season (LDS) to Early Dry Season (EDS). The project activity is carried out by three Indigenous ranger groups: the Djelk Rangers (Bawinanga Aboriginal Corporation) based at Maningrida, the Mimal Rangers (Mimal Land Management Aboriginal Corporation) based in Bulman and the Arafura Swamp Rangers (Arafura Swamp Rangers Aboriginal Corporation) who operate out of the Ramingining community, east of Darwin.
