CMI welcomes the appointment of Suzanne Thompson as the inaugural First Nations member of the Emission Reduction Assurance Committee, soon to become the Carbon Abatement Integrity Committee.
CMI CEO John Connor said:
“This is a historic appointment, realising an important recommendation of the Independent Professor Chubb led review of Australia’s carbon crediting framework. It is vital that the rights and interests of native title holders are respected in the development, of and investment in, climate solutions enabled through carbon crediting, so this is a welcome step for Australia’s framework.”
“Suzanne’s appointment will provide an informed and well connected First Nations voice at early stages of method development and review as participants seek to embed the principles of free prior and informed consent into decision making.”
“As a member organisation with close connections with the Indigenous community, we are commited to ensuring First Nations voices are heard in our events, processes and in the operation of the Carbon Industry Code of Conduct.”
“We look forward to working with Suzanne Thompson and the revitalised Emissions Reduction Assurance Committee and the Carbon Abatement Integrity Committee when it is legislated next year,” he said.
