By combining sustainable land management with carbon abatement and biodiversity conservation, Crystalvale Station Nature Refuge in Far North Queensland connects with neighbouring, Holroyd and Yarraden Nature Refuges which together form a 500,000-hectare ecological corridor providing a haven for numerous native Cape York plant and animal species.

In 2024, Queensland’s Department of Environment, Science and Innovation (DESI) officially declared Crystalvale Station a nature refuge through its Private Protected Area Program. As part of the program, an ecological assessment identified habitat for threatened species such as the Cape York Rock Wallaby, Red Goshawk, Cooktown Orchid, and several rare bat species, which then informed the design of fire management lines and infrastructure placement to minimise ecological disruption.

A cultural heritage assessment of the property further identified and mapped sites of cultural significance to the native title holders. Measures including realignment of boundary fencing and buffer zones around culturally important trees have since been implemented to ensure these areas remain protected.

Committed to balancing economic activity with environmental and cultural conservation, Crystalvale Station also supports sustainable cattle operations as part of its integrated land use model and a Carbon Project.

Registered under the ACCU Scheme’s Savanna Fire Management methodology, today the Crystalvale Station carbon project utilises a range of traditional owner-informed fire management activities to reduce late-season wildfires and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

The cultural heritage survey of Crystalvale Station saw some of the traditional owners go out on-country for the first time and facilitated access for others who had not been on-country for 40 years.
