Avoiding deforestation and fixing damaged ecosystems would help prevent of pull down large quantities of greenhouse emissions and provide up to a third of what will be needed to reach net zero emissions by 2050, said John Connor, chief executive of the Carbon Market Institute, which was funded for the report by the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment.

Australia’s small but emerging market for ACCUs generated by farmers – a key clash point for the current National Party political upheaval – puts it in a unique position to help develop similar projects in Fiji, PNG, the Solomons and elsewhere, according to the report’s authors.

“We do have a reputation for being laggards, but we have a leading carbon market and assurance framework for carbon credits,” said Mr Connor.
