We have released a number of our upcoming event dates in 2026. Please mark your diary!
Of particular note is the new Carbon Project Showcase Series, which is to start in Tasmania from 18-20 March 2026.
Join us in Tasmania for a rare, on-the-ground immersion into carbon forestry in practice. Over 3 days, attendees will visit established and emerging plantation projects, hear directly from landholders, foresters and project managers, and explore how scale, permanence and operational efficiency are being delivered under the ACCU Scheme.
From site visits in the Woodsdale cluster and Derwent Valley to standout winery lunches and Hobart dining, this tour combines technical insight with exceptional local experiences. The program concludes with a cultural highlight at MONA.
Places are limited. This is a rare opportunity to learn about projects in practice whilst experiencing the delights and hospitality of Tasmania.
Looking ahead to the major activities for 2026, the government will conduct a review of the Safeguard Mechanism in the second half of the year which will be open for consultation. CMI has set up a Taskforce to inform our position. It is open to members that have entities covered under the Safeguard Mechanism, as well as market advisers and financial institutions that are active on the demand side. The review will consider a broad range of design considerations that could have substantial implications for the size and shape of Australia’s carbon market and the range of organisations that are covered.
Another priority is finalising CMI’s response to the ERAC consultation of the department’s Integrated Farm and Land Management (IFLM) paper. The CMI IFLM Taskforce is also currently formulating a response, due by 9 March, utilising the technical expertise and input of CMI members. The IFLM method is about making carbon farming work for real farms and landscapes, and achieve long-term carbon and nature outcomes, while also providing a commercially viable project pipeline to contribute to Australia’s climate goals. As a framework method, it will allow multiple land management activities to be recognised within a single, coherent carbon project.
The release of the Reforming the ACCU Scheme progress report by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water provides a much-needed update on actions undertaken to date to implement ACCU Scheme improvements in line with recommendations from the independent review. In our media statement, we welcomed the release of the report as an indication of renewed government commitment to the reforms. However, to ensure timely implementation of the reforms, a clear implementation delivery plan with timelines is needed to underpin confidence in the Scheme, with particular emphasis on priorities such as legislative reforms and FPIC-aligned consent processes.
The ACCU Scheme is also under statutory review in 2026 by the Climate Change Authority and CMI is actively involved in the review and reform process.
