Background 

 

The Carbon Market Institute (CMI) is an independent member-based business institute that promotes the use of market-based solutions and supports best practice in decarbonisation to limit warming to 1.5ºC. CMI’s membership comprises 150+ businesses and organisations across all sectors of the economy and carbon supply chain in Australia and the Asia- Pacific region. Our focus is to:

  • Build capacity and opportunities through inclusive engagement and education.
  • Facilitate best practice and integrity in decarbonisation strategies, investments, carbon projects and market participants.
  • Develop and support policy and regulatory frameworks aligned with UNFCCC Paris Agreement climate goals.

In March 2024, CMI introduced a Member and Sponsorship Policy that requires carbon-intensive and large corporate members to have publicly available decarbonisation transition plans by mid-2025 to be eligible for full CMI membership, or to be a lead sponsor at major CMI events.

CMI is seeking to employ a Net Zero Engagement Manager, to join a passionate and dedicated team working with businesses in Australia and across the Asia-Pacific region to accelerate climate action towards CMI’s vision of a prosperous negative emissions, nature positive world. The role will be responsible for the management of the CMI’s corporate outreach and engagement programs, driving best practice approaches to decarbonisation and demand side integrity in carbon markets through a range of initiatives. It will suit a candidate with a minimum of 5 years professional experience.

The role reports directly to the CMI Director Corporate Transition and will be based in Brisbane, Melbourne or Sydney.

The primary purpose of the Net Zero Engagement Manager role is to manage corporate outreach and engagement to build business capacity and facilitate best practice and integrity in decarbonisation strategies and carbon market engagement. The Net Zero Engagement Manager will be responsible for analysis and research on evolving best practice approaches to corporate transition and decarbonisation. The Net Zero Engagement Manager will also be expected to build strategic partnerships and contribute towards industry engagement to advance CMI’s strategic objectives. The Candidate must have a strong grasp of sustainability frameworks, standards and taxonomies and their application to corporates and investors. The Candidate must also have excellent interpersonal and presentation skills to be able to build trusted relationships and support inclusive engagement and education.

Salary range $90-110K base salary (plus superannuation) (negotiable based on experience).

This is a 12-month fixed term role with a possible view to extension.

Key Responsibilities

Corporate outreach and engagement

·        Manage proactive outreach and engagement with corporate entities on mandatory and best practice transition frameworks, standards and taxonomies with Director Corporate Transition, including on decarbonisation, transition planning and disclosure, demand side integrity in carbon markets and nature positive.

·        Manage operationalisation of CMI Member and Sponsorship Policy with Director Corporate Transition and CMI Membership Team.

·        Support delivery of Corporate Climate Leadership Working Group program with Director Corporate Transition to promote best practice approaches to corporate transition.

·        Support delivery of annual Corporate Climate Masterclass Series to build capacity and educate market participants on the role of carbon markets in corporate decarbonisation and high-integrity approaches to market engagement.

·        Support delivery of Investor Working Group program.

Analysis and research

·        Synthesise guidance and analysis for CMI thought leadership and external briefings on best practice approaches to corporate transition and decarbonisation.

·        Contribute towards development of policy submissions with Manager Government Relations and Policy Research and CMI Executive Team.

·        Manage research projects with CMI Executive, Team and external partners.

Partnerships and industry engagement

·        Engage in industry working groups and conferences where appropriate.

·        Support in the coordination and delivery of CMI’s annual Australasian Emissions Reduction Summit and other key events, webinars and other public engagements

·        Support strategic partnerships to advance CMI’s strategic objectives, working with Events and Membership Team.

  • Well-developed skills in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Ability to work autonomously within a team based working environment.

Knowledge and experience:

  • Minimum 5 years’ professional experience (corporate experience desirable).
  • Tertiary qualifications in business/law/economics/science/sustainability or an associated field (bachelor-level or higher).
  • Strong grasp of corporate sustainability frameworks, standards and taxonomies and their application to businesses and investors.
  • Experience in stakeholder engagement and education, particularly with businesses and investors.
  • Previous experience and/or a demonstrable interest in climate change, emissions reductions, carbon markets, and/or business sustainability and corporate transition strategy.
