Status Update

We take a look at international progress on markets over the last 12 months, with a particular focus on progress under Article 6 at the recent Bonn Intersessional negotiations and how these are expected to influence the negotiating agenda at COP29. With countries across the APAC region already signing memoranda of understanding under Article 6, we consider how the international carbon market framework will interact with domestic carbon pricing mechanism already in effect across Asia.

Nature Positive for Global Impact

An up-and-coming transition plan norm, nature-based commitments are an impactful climate mitigation tool. Regulatory and reporting expectations are emerging. Global frameworks and initiatives such as the Kunming-Montreal Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures framework and the Science Based Targets Network’s guidance for nature are leading the charge. How can markets speed up this transition, and drive strong contributions to climate and nature?

Roundtable Discussion

Investment for Decarbonisation

Businesses and governments are seeking new ways to invest in a net zero-carbon economy, and contribute to climate and economic resilience. Capex investments in climate solutions have reached record highs, but fall short of what is required to reach net zero by 2050. How can carbon markets mobilise necessary private finance, and what policy enablers are needed to foster the right conditions for investors and to ensure appropriate risk return profiles? Join this panel as it explores strategies and emerging solutions facilitating investment in decarbonisation across the Asia Pacific region from corporations, funds, institutional investors and philanthropy.

Plenary Three

Decarbonising Industrial Supply Chains

Meeting Paris-aligned emission reduction goals requires rapid industrial decarbonisation. With significant economic and industrial output growth projected for countries in the Asia Pacific Region in the next few decades, energy use and GHG emissions related to the industry sector are projected to grow substantially in the absence of aggressive abatement policies and strategies by countries in the region. Energy and industrial transition remain challenging alongside efforts for green steel, cement and hydrogen. This panel will explore the potential to drive industrial decarbonisation action, particularly through collaboration in supply chains.

Transport Decarbonisation & Markets

Singapore is a key shipping and air transport hub for the Asia Pacific Region. With frameworks such as CORSIA and the International Maritime Organisation’s 2023 GHG Strategy driving corporate strategy, demand is growing for investment in mitigation technologies and high integrity carbon projects. This workshop will look at public and private initiatives, including markets, working to decarbonise long-distance freight and transport systems.

Enhanced Integrity for Investment-Grade Carbon Markets

With increasing focus on the integrity of corporate transition and approaches to net zero and nature positive outcomes, this session will focus on the requirements for investment-grade credits that can drive transformational change and attract institutional investors into the asset class. Recent guidance from the Science-Based Targets Initiative, and the revised Oxford Principles for Net-Zero Aligned Carbon Offsetting support enhanced engagement with carbon markets. This plenary will examine the considerations required to facilitate the expansion of investment-grade carbon credits.
