PLEASE NOTE THAT DUE TO THE SEVERE WEATHER IN SYDNEY THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED TO 21 JULY.

Building on the success of last year’s inaugural event, this symposium aims to explore the effect on the market of the reformed Safeguard Mechanism and ways in which it could evolve into the future to support a high-ambition 2035 national climate target. Leveraging market research and insights, CMI will convene key government, policy and corporate leaders to reflect on the first compliance year of the Safeguard Mechanism and opportunities to harness carbon markets in Australia’s climate policy suite.

Panel Discussion: What did we learn? Market Investment and Safeguard Mechanism in the first compliance year

Speakers on the first panel will contemplate the effect of the first compliance period under the reformed Safeguard Mechanism on the ACCU market. Our expert panel will delve into whether the market responded as expected, the impact and distribution of safeguard mechanism credits as well as whether there is sufficient investment in the supply of high integrity credits to support projected demand. We anticipate a full and robust discussion amongst panellists with backgrounds in carbon projects, trading, analysis, government and finance.

Where to from here? Leveraging the Safeguard Mechanism 2026/27 Review

The second panel session will consider how can the 2026-2027 Safeguard Mechanism review could be leveraged to evolve the Safeguard Mechanism to supports Australia’s ratcheting climate ambition. This panel will consider how learnings from the first compliance year, Australia’s 2035 Nationally Determined Contribution and other emerging research might shape the 2026-2027 review and feed into future policy considerations. CMI has used its reach to convene a panel which has representatives from covered entities, market research and statutory bodies to stimulate a conversation which is broad and deep.
