The Carbon Market Institute (CMI) has partnered with the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX), to present a free series of seminars on the role of derivatives in carbon emissions risk management practices. Derivatives are a powerful mechanism to help a broad range of companies including Safeguard facilities to manage various risks and surrender obligations.
The seminars aim to increase participants’ knowledge of carbon futures, their use as part of a carbon emissions management program and their place in the broader carbon market. The in-person free seminar series kicks off in Sydney on 28 August, and can also be attended in Melbourne, Brisbane or Perth.

Each session will be presented as an in person, three-hour event, with two hours of content delivered from 10am to 12 noon followed by a networking lunch until 1pm.
The role of derivatives in carbon emissions risk management
Foundational knowledge and context
The seminar will start with an introduction to carbon markets and the importance of derivatives to create a liquid and transparent market environment for carbon in Australia. What types of carbon markets exists and where are they found? The session will also cover the reformed Safeguard Mechanism as the foundation of Australia’s compliance market and an overview of standard tradeable products in Australia’s carbon market.

What are derivatives and how they are a valuable tool for the market? This session explores the role of the ASX and how derivatives enhance an organisations risk management and pricing strategy. Attendees will learn about the benefits that can be gained from Environmental Futures products and how derivatives work in practical examples to manage risk.
