CMI has a proud history of including and promoting Indigenous voices through its platforms and public events, formalised through our Indigenous Peoples Inclusion Strategy, which encourages the procurement of goods through Indigenous providers, were possible. The Strategy informed our decision last year to engage Yirra Miya, First Nations Creative Agency to design a unique lanyard for the 10th Australasian Emissions Reduction Summit. We are proud to now establish this process as a new tradition for the Summit, and unveil this year’s lanyard artwork Boorndup Biik, designed by Wurunjderi/Yorta Yorta artist Simone Thomson.
The lanyard artwork, entitled ‘Boorndup Biik’ (Respect Country) is uniquely place specific, with Naarm/Melbourne’s iconic Birrarung (Yarra River) weaving throughout the artwork, drawing together different elements. While, the artwork elements are a deliberate reflection of the Summit’s location, the artwork itself also conveys a broader message of working together to respect and heal Country regardless of location.
Simone Thomson has generously provided the below key to tell the story of the artwork, and we encourage all delegates to keep and reuse these lanyards at the close of the event.
The artist Simone Thomson contributed to the authorship of this piece. More information about Simone can be found on her website here.
