The Carbon Market Institute (CMI), with support from Telstra, is seeking a research partner to co-develop scenarios and help undertake regional employment and investment analysis that will demonstrate outcomes that could come from a well-aligned carbon and nature-positive industry.

To help inform CMI’s third national roadmap in 2025, CMI is seeking to work with a research partner to begin the co-development of new and expanded industry analysis and research that will show the regional and rural opportunities that will be delivered by a market that prioritises sufficient carbon sequestration to support Australia’s transition to net-zero emissions, alongside driving the pace and scale of nature restoration under Nature Positive commitments.

Using an established format, including modelling two future scenarios set at 2035 and 2050, the research will identify and map regional areas where an integrated nature and carbon approach can deliver greatest economic and environmental outcomes; as well as estimate the related regional and rural investment and employment opportunities. Ideally, outcomes of the analysis will be presented at this year’s CMI Carbon Farming Industry Forum 6-8 May 2025.

The research objectives include:

· Develop scenarios that present a picture of combined national targets for carbon and nature and the importance of interconnectivity of policy decisions

  • Identify areas where quick and most beneficial adoption of carbon and nature methods can be deployed – accelerating achievement of Australia’s climate and biodiversity targets and pathways for private sector engagement.
  • Model regional and rural benefits i.e. jobs, carbon investment, biodiversity improvement and economic outcomes in the above identified regions.
  • Present a summary of findings at this year’s Carbon Farming Forum in May 2025, which will help show potential drivers and opportunities for key stakeholders, e.g. business, policy makers, conservation groups and carbon project developers.
