The Australian Government’s 2026-27 Safeguard Mechanism Review formally gets underway this month, and it will be a significant focus for CMI over the second half of the year. Since establishing up our member-based Safeguard Mechanism Taskforce in October 2025, we have been working with members to develop evidence-based reform recommendations, and the Taskforce’s priorities will be front and centre at our Safeguard Symposium on 4 August. This year’s Symposium will bring together industrial, finance and policy leaders to consider what changes are needed to support long-term investment stability and enable further on-site decarbonisation, ahead of what promises to be a consequential review process.

In parallel, registrations are now open for our 4th Singapore Carbon Market & Investor Forum on 27 August, and expressions of interest are open for our next Carbon Project Showcase, taking CMI members to Iningai Country in Queensland in partnership with YACHATDAC. Further details on all three events are below.

Kind regards,

Dr. Sasha Courville

CEO, CMI

Net zero standards landscape converging

Members involved in target-setting and transition planning should note a wave of new international standards released in recent weeks, including the updated SBTi Corporate Net-Zero Standard v2 and the draft ISO 14060 Net Zero Aligned Organisations standard, alongside ISO’s new standard for financial institutions. A briefing from the International Corporate Positioning Hub (ICPH) notes these are designed to work together rather than compete, offering companies and financial institutions a more coherent, auditable basis for net zero claims and transition plans as global consultation on the ISO standard continues through August. Read the briefing.
