Dr Lien Duong is an Associate Professor and Chartered Accountant at the School of Accounting, Economics and Finance (Curtin University). She also holds the position of Vice President in the Vietnamese and Australian Scholars and Experts Association (VASEA). Lien’s research interests focus on carbon accounting, climate change, ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance), mergers and acquisitions, executive compensation, gender, and tax. Her research have been published in esteemed international journals such as Journal of Business Finance & Accounting, Business Strategy and the Environment. Her research findings have also been widely disseminated through numerous media outlets such as The Guardian, Australian Financial Review, The Conversation, The New Daily, National Nine News (TV), ABC News (TV), and ABC Radio.

Lien’s technical report, commissioned by Financial Counselling Australia, on the hidden costs of BNPL products was cited in The Treasury Options Paper in November 2022. It has played a crucial role in influencing the Australian Government’s decision to regulate the BNPL industry, announced in May 2023, aiming to safeguard disadvantaged consumers, particularly women, First Nations communities, and low-income individuals. She has also received funding from various government and industry bodies such as the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), Western Australian Government (Department of Communities, Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development), Financial Counselling Australia (Melbourne), the Tax Justice Network (Melbourne), RSM and Digital Finance CRC Ltd.

Lien’s contribution to academia have been widely recognised, and she has received several research, teaching and engagement awards from Curtin University and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), including 2023 Global Award for Industry Engagement, 2022 Faculty Global Position Award, 2022 Faculty Researcher Engagement Award, and 2013 Research Performance Index Award. She has successfully supervised 2 Honours, 1 Master by Research and 7 PhD students to completion, and having two PhD students receiving the Chancellor’s Letter of Commendation upon graduation. Prior to her academic career, Lien worked in the accounting and finance industry as management accountant, tax accountant and business analyst.
